Managing exposure risk with the Vulcan Cyber ExposureOS - 2 case studies from TrustRadius reviews

Discover how Vulcan Cyber centralized exposure management platform can revolutionize your security operations.

Tal Levi | November 10, 2024

The Vulcan Cyber centralized cyber risk management platform combines multiple streams of security data into a single data lake, enabling businesses to visualize, prioritize, and mitigate cyber threats faster and more efficiently. These benefits lead to effective time savings and cost reductions, as demonstrated by these case studies from a construction firm and a tech vendor company taken from reviews on PeerSpot, an enterprise technology buying intelligence platform.

Case study #1 – Construction

As the cybersecurity engineer of a large construction firm, this reviewer explains why the Vulcan Cyber ExposureOS is the right solution for his SecOps team. His priority when selecting a solution was for a centralized system which included automation to help save time.

“It is very important for us that Vulcan Cyber offers a single pane of glass for centralizing our security data […] to see all our assets in the company as well as all the vulnerabilities, not only from a single scanner but from different security scanners that we use in the company.” The user explains why a unified view was a priority for his team.

“We were searching for a tool in the market that would allow us to automate our vulnerability management processes. We found Vulcan Cyber to be the best one […] for automating different tasks involved in vulnerability management. We not only have a centralized place where we can find all the vulnerabilities and assets, we also have an easy way to automate the creation of tickets for different owners of the assets and other things.” He points out that collating information from many sources is just the first benefit;  built-in automation saves time on performing any straightforward tasks.

“Vulcan Cyber is very good for collecting our organization’s risk signals from multiple tools and attack surfaces into a single data lake. It is able to ingest information from different sources. They also have some capabilities to deduplicate data […] you see it as a single entry instead of having duplicates all over the place.” -The solution also saves time by removing duplicate reports.

“With the automation that Vulcan Cyber provides, it is very easy for us to see exactly what is the risk of a vulnerability, […] if the vulnerability is currently exploited in the wild, or if there are exploits that are publicly available that can be used by anyone. […] We see a summary of the vulnerability, so we know whether it is very critical for us because it is affecting some of our assets.” The visibility and risk assessment provided by a centralized data lake enables the team to prioritize which issues need to be solved.

“Vulcan Cyber has helped reduce our organization’s mean time to remediation. We have the capability to open some tickets automatically for different vulnerabilities we have in the platform without having to go to different ticketing tools or business owners individually.” In other words, the benefits of automation and risk-assessment filter down through the entire organization, as the SecOps and DevOps teams can mitigate issues faster, helping to keep downtime to a minimum.

The firm has reported a significant ROI from the Vulcan platform, through both time and cost savings. “Vulcan Cyber has, for sure, helped save costs for our organization when it comes to human hours spent to fix vulnerabilities […] When we have all that information in the platform, we can make decisions based on the data that we already have. That saves a lot of human hours […] (Vulcan) can help reduce the cost of person-hours that you spend with your team working on solving or patching different assets. You can use those hours or that effort to increase the patching talents in your company or create better policies for patching.”

Case study #2 – Tech

This review, from a Cybersecurity Architect for a large tech vendor, was looking for a solution that could provide a centralized platform for the multiple data streams and multiple teams throughout the business. Previously the SecOps team had been relying on an array of solutions being implemented by different teams, which was causing total confusion. With Vulcan Cyber, they were able to unravel the chaos and smooth out processes.

“Vulcan offers a holistic approach to vulnerability management, so we can see all the scanner findings and open tickets from one place. Three architects, a few other team members, and management use it, so we have six or seven people using it.” This user was looking for a clear, straightforward solution,so he appreciated the centralized view provided by the Vulcan platform.

“Having that single pane of glass view is especially important for our company because we have a lot of teams and products. It’s a mess.  We have a few tools that give us a high-level overview, but it’s not enough because we do not have a single tool that provides us with all the information. That’s what we were looking for.” He explains how a centralized platform makes it simpler for each of the relevant teams to view and access the data, even in a firm with a complex network and multiple stakeholders.

“Vulcan Cyber collects and aggregates results from our security scanning tools, so the engineering team only needs to use one tool […] It offers an easier way to manage vulnerabilities. It has improved our visibility […] It enables us to prioritize our mitigation. We have all kinds of findings. We can open tickets and track everything from there. When we have critical vulnerabilities, we must solve them ASAP. It helps because we can define what we want to find first and open the ticket automatically.” Working from a single pane means that his SecOps team is able to track the information they need, and act upon the findings, more efficiently.

“Automation helps reduce the amount of time needed to resolve the issue. We haven’t collected the metrics, but I can say that we improved by a few percentage points. It could be up to 10 percent.” For this user, the time savings from the Vulcan platform are mostly a result of the automated processes.

“It isn’t easy to get this level of vulnerability management at scale with a do-it-yourself approach. You could try to implement that on a small scale, but go for Vulcan if you’re trying to implement it on a large scale. I would recommend it because it gives you visibility for everything you have.”

As a cyber architect, he understands the instinct to try managing everything manually but explains how Vulcan Cyber will prove itself an invaluable tool.

Conclusion

Securing networks presents a greater challenge as organizations introduce layer upon layer of digital infrastructure, together with a variety of cyber solutions for protecting the different elements. Problems include ensuring that all teams have full network visibility, obtaining a clear understanding of where the highest levels of risk exist, and the time involved in processing the data from multiple sources. The above case studies demonstrate how Vulcan Cyber provides a unified data lake, presenting all the relevant information on a single pane of glass, making it simpler for SecOps to visualize the network and threat landscape, prioritize threats, and quickly remediate any problems, helping organizations to save costs and staff time.
